It's a shame for the guy in the bimmer around the 5:00 mark. He did all he could to avoid the biker and ended up putting his car in the guardrail.

Laziest flag guy ever at 3:25. Just casually walks over and sort of flops the flag around.

Since it's technically a public road, couldn't they have faulted the motorcyclist? I mean, I don't really know how that works over here, let alone in Germany, but it does look like the BMW's crash was unavoidable 100% because of the biker going down. I mean, I don't like to think that the poor guy is out one bike and has to pay for a car on top of that, but I also hate to think the driver just won the negative lottery without even buying a ticket.

Well I'm afraid he actually won the negative lottery..

Most insurances exclude "trackday" driving from their contracts, and even though the Nürburgring is technically an open road, insurances have ways to say that their contract doesn't apply there (for example because it's a one-way toll road that gets you back to your starting point).

Then again, some insurances cover the Nürburgring on their basic contracts, and some others offer "track options" which will cover it against some sort of extra. Hopefully the BMW driver had one of these.

Takes a little wind out of the sails for me on my occasional thoughts of "You know I'd like to go drive the ring some day". There were a lot of significant financial issues documented there for average Joe's.

You either have to go there and be completely sensible and drive the whole track at about 70%; and not really get a thrill, or throw caution to the wind, and have a pretty good chance of making it a very expensive lap.

Every time I've driven it in a video game I've at least gotten a tire on the grass. Granted, my video game throttle is much less governed then my real life one, but I think if I went through the trouble and expense of going there, I'd want to take a lot of hard corners.

That Smart "crash" was just so avoidable ... don't take a short car on skinny tires to the track. Boom, solved.

I chortled about that one, though.

//edit: Was that a Civic at 8:32? If I had to pick one of the crashes that I'd rather not be in, it would certainly be this one.
